It’s a fact. People
in Birmingham are better dressed than locals of any other city in
Britain and you only have to wander around the miles of shops to see
why this is the case. There’s no two ways about it: Birmingham is a shopper's paradise and whether you’re looking for designer clothes, antiques, furniture, shoes or toys you’ll find everything you could ever possibly need in Birmingham. Of course, it helps that there’s a shopping area the size of 26 football pitches in the middle of the city centre. The Birmingham Bullring [map] is one of those enormous shopping malls that has to be seen to be believed. Whilst this might be the norm in America, Britain is not accustomed to this kind of lavish monument to the shopper and for this reason alone it’s worth a visit. Stunningly designed at a cost of £500m the Bullring is brimming with shops, cafes, public squares, restaurants and bars. On a far smaller scale, but handy if you’ve just stepped off a train is The Pallasades [map], New Street, which is directly next to the station. Here you’ll find your usual travel friendly shops such as WH Smith and Woolworths. There’s also a number of cafes in which to rest and recuperate. If you’re not sure where to eat head to Pavilion Central [map], High Street, which has a huge food court – The Loft - that seats up to 600 people. Choose from burgers and pizza, Chinese cuisine, Italian treats or some traditional British fayre. One of Birmingham’s most impressive malls can be found at Wharfside Street. The Mailbox [map] is an achingly trendy collection of designer shops homed in an architecturally stunning building. Popular with famous local celebrities and members of the public who have money to burn, this is where you’ll find the coolest bars and restaurants as well as Harvey Nichols, Emporio Armani and DKNY. If you like your clothes original and quirky head to The Oasis [map] on Priory Walk. This independent shopping mall offers everything for the alternative shopper. This is where you’ll find all the retro and vintage accessories your heart could desire as well as bondage gear, skater clothes and boards, cute t-shirts and handmade ethnic items. Save money on clothes and you might just have enough left over to treat yourself to a small piece of jewellery at Birmingham’s fantastic Jewellery Quarter [map], Hockley. Here you’ll find a range of exquisite shops from Victorian finery to bang up to date bling. You’ll also have the opportunity to see how jewellery is made first hand. |
