Art lovers flock to Birmingham to enjoy the wide and varied selection

Built in 1590 Blakesley Hall [map], Yardley, is a beautiful building that was previously owned by Richard Smallbroke. Reflecting the lavish lifestyle of the late Tudor and Stuart period, the house is testament to the art and décor of those fascinating eras. Visitors are welcome throughout the year to enjoy the fine collections on offer. If you’re looking for something far more contemporary check out The Ikon Gallery [map], Oozells Square, Brindley Place, which is home to quality art work from across the globe. A continuous programme of changing exhibitions means that it is impossible to see everything in this interesting gallery in one visit. In addition to displaying art, the Ikon Gallery aims to encourage public engagement with art and debate on artwork, and so also plays host to a range of speakers, artists, and classes for beginners to get involved with art themselves. The Artifex Gallery has many similarities to the Ikon Gallery, however its focus is on the visual arts. The Artifex Gallery [map] is a stunning gallery showcasing the very best contemporary British art and design. Situated in a converted barn, the gallery displays some of the finest pieces of contemporary furniture, glass, ceramics, metal work, jewellery, and paintings being produced today, with an emphasis on innovation and high quality craftsmanship. Artifex shows a programme of changing exhibitions on two floors incorporating a variety of media. There is a large area devoted to paintings, all original, featuring the work of about 18 artists at any one time. Ranging in styles and techniques, the gallery displays the work of contemporary artists from all over the British Isles. The furniture gallery specialises in one-off pieces of contemporary furniture made by Britain’s finest craftsmen. You can buy from the large selection on display, seek inspiration from the extensive portfolios of work by all of the makers, or turn your dreams into reality with the personal commissioning service. Artifex Gallery is located at Mitchell Art & Craft Centre [map], Weeford Road, Sutton. The Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) is one of this country’s leading and busiest arts centres, welcoming over half a million visitors each year. Set in the magnificent Cannon Hill Park, less than two miles from the city centre, MAC plays a unique role in Birmingham’s cultural development, covering all art forms and reflecting the diversity of cultures in the region. With three performance spaces (including the unique outdoor arena), a cinema, six galleries and exhibition spaces, and fourteen studios and workshops, MAC offers an extensive programme encompassing drama, music, dance, film, comedy, visual and performance arts. Events include internationally renowned festivals and exhibitions, world premieres of new works and visits from established national companies.
