Guide To Birmingham |
 |
 |
Bustling Birmingham has
always been ahead of the game when it comes to culture, so it’s
no surprise that there’s literally hundreds of places to awaken
the artist or musician in you.
To get one enormous blast of culture pumping through your veins make
your first port of call The Custard Factory [map],
Gibb Street. This is the definitive place for arts and media in Birmingham.
The Custard Factory is home to a dynamic community of more than 500
artists and small creative enterprises.
As well as a large number of studio workshops – many of which
are open to the public and have work on offer to purchase –
there’s also a theatre café, range of antique
shops, meeting rooms, dance studios, art galleries
and two renowned clubs: the Medicine Bar [map]
and the Code [map]
nightclub.
This is the perfect place for a potted history of arts and media in
Birmingham and to see what dynamic and dramatic ideas the new talent
of this area has in store for the future.
If you’re seeking inspiration of a musical kind Birmingham has
one of the greatest orchestras in the world.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra [map],
CBSO Centre, Berkeley Street, was founded in 1920 and first conducted
by the famous Edward Elgar.
Of course a world-renowned orchestra needs a fantastic hall to perform
in and you’ll be hard pressed to find one more impressive than
the Symphony Hall [map],
Broad Street. Widely regarded as one of the greatest concert halls
in the world, this lavish building regularly features the talents
of The CBSO as well as a programme of prestigious international concerts
and some of the very best rock and pop artists around.
The Birmingham Hippodrome [map]
, Hurst Street, is home to Britain’s premier touring ballet
company: The Birmingham Royal Ballet. The Ballet performs throughout
Britain and the world but it’s always a pleasure to see them
on home turf. Make this a priority when visiting Birmingham and you’ll
be guaranteed to have a truly magical evening.
