If you’re in need of a giggle it’s time to head to one
of Northern Ireland’s comedy clubs and relieve some tension. The J20 Waterfront Comedy Club is held regularly at Belfast Waterfront Hall [map], Lanyon Place, and offers an explosively fun time with performances from the likes of Give My Head Peace, which is Northern Ireland’s most popular sitcom, and comedy dramas such as Club Sound. Another great place to see some of Belfast’s up-and-coming comedians is the Empire Bar and Music Hall [map] , Botanic Avenue. This is where many internationally popular comedians first found fame and still hosts nights where local talent are put firmly in centre stage. If you like a little song and dance with your comedy then check out what's on at the Grand Opera House [map]. Here you'll find a number of touring musical productions, some of which have comedy as a central theme like The Play What I Wrote. But you will also find drama and stand-up on the bill that is likely to put a smile on your face. Belfast’s most-loved comedy star is May McFettridge; a tiny Ulster housewife who has a sharp tongue and a heart of gold. But there’s more to May than meets the eye (think of NI’s answer to Dame Edna), and she regularly headlines major shows at the Grand Opera House, Great Victoria Street. In fact she’s been there more than anyone else living or dead in the Opera House’s esteemed history, making a visit to see little May a must during your stay in Belfast.
